Ascend | Recede
Video and Sound Installation
Ascend | Recede is a video and sound installation which borrows from the space of the attic in the artist’s grandfather’s childhood home, where she stayed for the duration of her residency at Ormond Art Studios. The work reflects on ideas of ageing and memory loss through imagery and processes of repetition and transition.
The work centres around an image of the attic wallpaper: a system of fresh pale flowers now creased and stained with time. Within the work, its repetitions are confused; distorted as though misremembered. These patterns sink, breathe, and fade to form a thin skin around the blue wooden wall panels. Surrounding this, a sound installation imagines the rhythm of spiralling footsteps ascending a staircase. They circle the viewer and continue upwards, passing through the space.Link to Work
